A message from Principal Karr

Hi Field Families,

We made it to the end of another successful school year! Our students have shown resilience and determination throughout the school year, and we could not be prouder of them. As a school, we have been inspired by their commitment to their personal growth and are excited to see them excel even more next school year. Field is truly a special place with an amazing community—the success our students earned would not be possible without your ongoing parent support. The community involvement has made a tremendous impact, and we are grateful for the partnership.

The beginning of the 2024-2025 school year will be here before you know it! Please regularly check the school website and PTO social media pages for updates on summer or back to school events. In the meantime, we hope everyone has an awesome summer filled with family time, adventures, and relaxation.

Go Lions!

A message from our PTO President

Congratulations Field families on another successful school year! When I reflect on the past year, I am in awe at the amount of love and sense of community we have built.

This was a big year for Field Elementary teachers and students. From our initiative to begin our SPARK park renovation to fulfilling Principal Karr’s vision of a secure campus perimeter, every family lent a hand in one way or another. Our annual FUN RUN was a huge success. Our 2nd Auction was unforgettable! We witnessed our Choir perform the National Anthem at Opening Day for the Houston Dynamo. We supported our National Elementary Honor Society students in their goal to provide a new trashcan for the Pre-K/Kindergarten playground.

Our Name That Book Club teams excelled all year long.  A few of our very own 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students were selected for publication in the Watchful Eye anthology through Writers in Schools (WITS) and will have the opportunity to read their works at the Menil. Our Dad’s Club executed the GAGA Ball pit! From excelling in academics to our Safety Patrol and our CHAMPS program, our students are inspirational and should be so proud of themselves.

Thank you to all families for your volunteer efforts, for your generous donations, and for your constant support in our efforts to make Field shine. Thank you to the teachers who have devoted their lives to helping our tiny humans grow academically and emotionally. Thank you to Principal Karr, Mrs. Tate, Ms. Ortiz, and the entire Administrative team who ferociously lead us everyday. Thank you to Mrs. Esquivel for growing the hearts of our students through a love of books. Thank you to Mr. Zelaya and Mr. Lewis for being role models and for fostering support systems in and out of the classrooms. Thank you to Mr. Dallas and his team for keeping our school environment clean and safe.  Thank you to ALL students — we do what we do as a PTO for YOU!

It has been a joy serving as your President and I am so proud of the things we accomplished this year.  My goal has always been to build momentum in order to encourage involvement and engagement, to encourage inclusivity, and to foster the joys of Field Elementary.  As a PTO, we are looking into next year and beginning to dream up future projects.  Be on the lookout for a survey — we want to hear your ideas, your goals, and your vision for Field.

I look forward to seeing everyone in the neighborhood, in the Gaga Ball pit, and at our Summer Playdates — GO LIONS GO!

Every May we take extra time to celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month.

Why is AANHPI Heritage Month celebrated in May?

As we joyfully embrace Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, it’s paramount to ponder the invaluable contributions and rich experiences of the AAPI community.

Back in 1977, the U.S. Congress, led by Representative Frank Horton of New York and Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawai'i, designated the first ten days of May to honor the history and impactful contributions of Asian American communities across the nation. What began as a week of observance has since evolved into a month-long celebration, coinciding with the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the U.S. shores in 1843. Additionally, we commemorate the historic completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, recognizing the significant role played by Chinese immigrants, who comprised the majority of the labor force responsible for laying those monumental tracks.

As we immerse ourselves in the festivities of AAPI Heritage Month, let’s take a moment to deeply contemplate the myriad contributions of the AAPI community and reaffirm our dedication to forging a society that is truly inclusive and equitable for all.

Check out this article from Boys & Girls Clubs of America on 10 Ways to Celebrate AANHPI Heritage Month with Kids & Teens, to learn more about these cultures and communities with kids across the nation.

Do you have Asian or Pacific Island heritage? Help us put a pin on the map for your country of heritage! We'd love for you to share a fun fact or bring an item to showcase in the school lobby!

AAPI decorations will be displayed this month and installed Friday morning. We can't wait to learn your favorite things from your country and celebrate all the diverse cultures at Field!

For more information, or questions, please contact our PTO Parental Involvement, Diversity Chair, Ganda Carpio at ganda_carpio@yahoo.com or 330-559-0277.

Writers in the Schools - Menil Collection

Since 1989, Writers in the Schools (WITS) has brought Houston school children to the Menil Collection where, through writing about the artworks they encounter, they learn the power of their own voices. Students are chosen through a juried competition to be published in the Watchful Eye anthology and to read their work in this program at the Menil to culminate the school year.

We would like to congratulate the following Field Elementary students whose work was selected for publication:

  • 3rd graders Annabelle S., Daniel K. and Lorelei R.
  • 4th graders Miles G. and Shane W.
  • 5th graders Kate M. and Holden L.

Students will read their work at The Menil Collection’s Young Writers Reading event this Friday, May 3rd. Big thanks to our teachers Ms. Sicinski and Ms.Zehner, Ms. Sayegh and Ms. Perez for advocating for our students and bringing WITS to Field!

This lecture takes place in the main building, located at 1533 Sul Ross Street. Additional information regarding accessibility and parking can be found here. As always, Menil programs are free and open to all.

Our school community helps raise funds for many campus and staff needs. We value your input and would like to hear from our families!

Field's NEHS students have acquired many great characteristics including, good academic record, leadership skills, work ethic, and a cooperative attitude. This year, students have donated countless hours volunteering all over their community. From picking up garbage at our campus and local parks to preparing meals at the Houston Food Bank. We are very proud of our group this year and would like to thank their parents for their flexibility and commitment to our school.

This week, we celebrated our National Elementary Honor Society students with a party on the pavilion! Our students in NEHS are true leaders on campus and have made such a positive impact on the school and community. We are still collecting numbers, but our students have volunteered over 480 hours combined this year—how amazing! Thank you to Ms. Trevino, Ms. Perez, and our parent volunteers for making this year of NEHS such a success.
