A message from our PTO President

It’s hard to believe that it is already the month of May, and we are in the final stretch of this 2022-2023 school year! What an amazing year for our community, students, families and staff of Field Elementary!

I think back to when the year started and now how we are finishing this year stronger than ever! We started the year off with our first ever auction fundraiser and that was just the beginning. As your PTO President, I have had the blessed opportunity to lead one of the most engaging, passionate, committed and fun group of volunteers. Together, with so much positive momentum and drive, we collaboratively worked hard to accomplish and exceed expectations on all our goals and visions. We consistently without hesitation added fundraisers, engagement opportunities, fine art programs, teacher and parent appreciation events and more, throughout this school year. As we look back, we are able to reflect and see the impact we made as a team who worked together, supported each other and truly enjoyed volunteering together with many of you, too! The deposit is in the hands of SPARK and contractors are preparing to install our NEW play structure over summer break. How exciting is that!!!! Stay tuned for an official ribbon cutting/Field ES play announcement to celebrate this amazing achievement.

As many of you know in our announcements and conversations, my family will be relocating to Atyrau, Kazakhstan the first week of August. My husband, Alan, works for Chevron and he will be leading a team there. After rotating for 4-8 weeks at a time for the last 4 years, we will finally be together as a family every morning and night, just on the other side of the world. We are not selling our home in the Heights and will be back in Houston to visit our dogs, family, friends and Field Elementary community over the holidays and summer breaks. When home and even from abroad, I will continue to volunteer and support Field ES as a community member. In 3 years, our plan is to be back at Field elementary, with a 5th, 4th and 2nd grader!
As I prepare to lead our final PTO General Meeting next Wednesday, May 10th at 5:30pm, I am reflecting with a grateful heart. Thank you for trusting us, supporting our fundraisers and events, and for making this year one of the best years at Field Elementary for all! An additional thank you to Principal Karr, Mr. Zelaya, Mrs. Tate and our wonderful teachers and staff, for all your support and partnership consistently through this year.

I hope to see you all at the Summer Play Dates! Have a healthy, safe and fun Summer Break! Go Lions!

Playground update!

The deposit is in the hands of SPARK and contractors are preparing to install our NEW play structure over summer break. Stay tuned for the official date and ribbon cutting ceremony!

The PTO could not do all of the amazing things it does without the dedicated group of volunteers who are so generous with their time and efforts. If you volunteered in any capacity this school year, THANK YOU! Stay tuned for ways you can volunteer your time and get involved next school year!

Every May we take extra time to celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month.

Why is AANHPI Heritage Month celebrated in May?

As we celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, it is important to reflect on the contributions and experiences of the AAPI community. AAPIs are the fastest-growing racial group in the United States, with a population of over 22 million. Despite this growth, AAPIs have often been marginalized and underrepresented in American society.

In 1977 the U.S. Congress (spearheaded by Representative Frank Horton of New York and Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawai'i) chose the first ten days of May to commemorate the history and contributions of Asian American communities here in the U.S. The week's observance became a month, the very month in which the first Japanese immigrants came to the U.S. in 1843. We also commemorate the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869 as the majority of workers who laid those railroad tracks were Chinese immigrants.

As we continue to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, let us reflect on the contributions of the AAPI community and renew our commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all.

Check out this article from Boys & Girls Clubs of America on 10 Ways to Celebrate AANHPI Heritage Month with Kids & Teens, to learn more about these cultures and communities with kids across the nation.

Summer Enrichment and Programs

As summer approaches, many parents are considering how to keep their children engaged and active during the break from school. For elementary-age children, summer programming and camps can be an excellent way to provide opportunities for learning, socialization, and fun. These programs can help bridge the opportunity gap by providing academic support, socialization, and enrichment activities.

In addition to providing academic support, summer programming, and camps can help children develop important life skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. Many programs are designed around specific themes or activities, such as sports, the arts, or science, which provide opportunities for children to explore their interests and build confidence in their abilities.

Most importantly, summer programming and camps can be a source of fun and excitement for children. They provide opportunities for children to make new friends, try new things, and create lasting memories. For parents, summer programming and camps can offer peace of mind knowing that their children are in a safe and stimulating environment during the summer months.

Elementary summer programming and camps can be essential to a child's summer experience. They provide opportunities for academic support, skill-building, socialization, and fun. Parents should consider their options carefully and find a program that fits their child's interests and needs.

In Houston, capacity can be very limited and competitive. Still, need a summer program for your child? HISD has summer camps focused on STEM, Music, Art, and more with available seats. Also, the City of Houston Parks and Recreation is still filling seats for this summer.

To our community of bakers, cooks, volunteers, Field teachers and Staff, our families, our children, friends, neighbors, local and corporate business sponsors and Field ES PTO: THANK YOU

On our second year, Taste Of Field raised a total of $13,061.88 dollars (and still counting) in net profits. These funds will support our Field Elementary School Fine Arts Initiative, which supplements our school with artistic ancillary options for students at all grade levels.

Your time, contributions, creativity, presence, talent and energy made Taste of Field, once again, a wonderful experience for all! We should be all proud to be part of this community. Lets continue cultivating our shared sense of fellowship, belonging and ownership!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The PTO could not do all of the amazing things it does without the dedicated group of volunteers who are so generous with their time and efforts. Involvement with the PTO is a wonderful way to get to know the school, staff, students, and other parents.

There are many different ways to get involved. We encourage you to learn more about the events and activities that the PTO sponsors and volunteer where you can.

Please note that all volunteers who will be working with students on campus or on field trips need to be registered through the school district’s Volunteers in Public Schools program, or VIPS. VIPS requires all volunteers to register annually. For more information, click here.

There are many ways to get involved over the summer and we’ll be hard at work beautifying our school before Students and Staff return in August!
